What are FODMAPs?
FODMAPs are short-chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the gut. They include:
- Fructose: found in honey, apples, mangoes, pears, watermelon, asparagus, artichokes, onions, garlic, and wheat
- Lactose: found in milk, ice cream, cheese, and yogurt
- Fructans: found in wheat, rye, garlic, onion, and inulin (a type of fiber)
- Galactans: found in legumes such as beans, lentils, and soybeans
- Polyols: found in sweeteners like xylitol and sorbitol as well as mushrooms and cauliflower
- The Low FODMAP diet
